Sevilla water supply, Spain Total conceptualization of various control systems

Seville Waterworks
The Spanish city Sevilla, the capital of Andalusia, has about 730000 inhabitants as well as a lot of tourists, who need a fresh water supply every day.

Especially during summers, permanent water supply to the four largest Spanish cities proves to be an immense challenge for the resident operators.

Not least because the low precipitation of the raw material water is a scarce asset.

The application

The water supply system in Sevilla that was continuously expanded had several lower-level control systems that could not communicate with each other due to which information about flow rates, flows or pump runtimes are saved in a scattered manner.

Reason: The operator previously often used control technology of various manufacturers and providers.

Isotrol S.A. from Sevilla, a specialist company for control and information systems opted for the Phoenix Contact technology in order to be able to integrate various control systems into the communication during the modernization of pipe systems.

Solution

The control system is based on decentrally installed control systems of type ILC 200 UNI that are equipped with transparent, serial interface cards. The high level of flexibility of the devices and the advantages of highly standardized programming according to standard IEC 61131-3 enable user-specific configuration for communication with virtually all serial protocols available on the market.

Each distributed unit has analog and digital I/O cards that support modular extension, which are used to locally monitor all operating parameters such as pressure, flow rate, capacity or chlorine content.

In addition to the actual open and closed-loop control tasks, where the ILC 200 UNI acquires and processes the values from the measuring instruments, this information is also prepared for further processing. For example, measured values are standardized or count values are mapped from pulses. This information can then be transferred to the control center via the various PCP channels. The PCP channel used here is a wireless channel.

Its use increases the data transmission speed on one hand and reduces the operational costs on the other.

Summary

The user-specifically configurable technology from Phoenix Contact enables an expansion of the existing control networks.

The previously used control systems can be used further and an additional communication network does not need to be set up. Control and remote control tasks can be implemented cost-effectively with one device.
