Munich Municipal Drainage System, Germany Use of a new process control system

Process control technology in the Gut Großlappen sewage treatment plant
A new process control technology concept in the Gut Großlappen sewage treatment plant in Munich required modernization of long-distance data transmission.

After a public tender procedure, Hautz GmbH from Lenting, an expert in computer-controlled automation, got the order for modernization of the remote control technology of the decentral channel network stations of the rain gauge and regional initiator.

Surge protection devices, signal converters, power supply units and automation technology from Phoenix Contact have been planned in this project.

The application

32 stations distributed over the municipal area of Munich should be decentrally automated and all data must be transmitted to the sewage treatment plant.

The measuring data from the outdoor cabinets should be led to a substation via a fixed connection of a telephone provider and should be transmitted to the sewage treatment plant via a separate glass fiber cable for approx 14 km.

Similarly, the installation of another substation was desired directly in the sewage treatment plant; it provides data via separate remote telecommunications of four other stations. The connection to the process control system must be established via a OPC server.

Solution

In the external stations, control systems of type ILC 200 IB with I/O modules and RS-232 terminals from the IP20 product range Inline and corresponding modems ensure problem-free operation.

A high-performance PLC of type RFC 430 with total 27 Inline RS-232 modules and 27 Phoenix Contact modems configured as per permanent line operation are used as substation 1.

All power supply units and telephone lines are secured through surge protection devices. In sub control center 2, an RFC 430 also collects the data via RS-485 connections.

Our "AUTOMATIONWORX for Remote Systeme - Resy+" remote control systems can be used for data transmission via fixed connections of the Telecom telephone providers as well as via separate permanent lines.

The data of the RFCs are transferred via FO converters to the central switch in the sewage treatment plant and are provided to the control system via a PC with INTERBUS OPC server.
